A Sikh’s Paradigm for Universal Peace is a treasury of Sikh Scripture, History, and Stories. The author, Dr. R.K. Janmeja Singh, affectionately known as Meji Singh by friends and family has one foot in the Indus valley, where he was born and raised and where Sikhism had its beginning 500 years ago; the other in Northern California’ Bay Area, where he looks back on half a century of teaching and practicing community psychiatry as a visionary psychologist. Meji the teacher is particularly known for his engaged listening, a rare gift that creates a learning context which promotes a student’s self-discovery.
This book opens us to Meji’s rich spiritual religious heritage – a tradition sad to say, known in the West primarily through the turbans worn by most Sikh men and some Sikh women. Most people do not know that Sikhism is a religion of the heart, that its founder was a poet-singer and its scripture comes in the form of devotional hymns, that it one of the world’s most interfaith-friendly religions, or that Sikhs have an ancient, still vital reputation for acting intuitively and immediately to help whenever they find someone in crisis.
In this book, Meji Singh surveys a universe conveyed through devotional poetry, a dramatic, often poignant historical record, and robust ethical grounding. The text weaves its way through Sikh theological assumption, generous quotations from Sikh Scripture, a many layered history, and dozens of stories that bring the narrative to life.
On the basis of his experience as a clinical psychologist and an organizational consultant, along with his study of Sikh scriptures, he has presented a Paradigm for Peace and Harmony in this book. So far the evolution of human civilization is dominated by greed, power and violence. Now we have sufficient peaceful conflict resolution technology available to evolve our civilization and preserve the planet based on a paradigm of love, care and service of our fellow human beings.
