Piety and Splendour: Sikh Heritage in Art $45.00
Piety and Splendour: Sikh Heritage in Art

B. N. Goswamy Paperback. Large format. Full-color. 250 pages. National Museum, New Delhi ISBN: 81-85832-09

Is it possible that within a year of the truly delectable exhibition and book Arts of the Sikh Kingdoms, another Sikh art exhibition and book -- different artworks but just as life-enhancing -- could be produced?

Yes. Professor B. N. Goswamy, Emeritus Professor at Chandigarh University, has curated an exhibition for the National Museum in Delhi of astonishing breadth and beauty. This is the book of his achievement. Along with the splendor in arms, paintings and jewelry so evident in ‘Arts of the Sikh Kingdoms’, there is a large section on piety (of the Gurus and others). Objects and artworks depicting ordinary Sikh people are also featured.

Each work has a description in Professor Goswamy’s softly evocative prose. One of India’s most eminent art historians, he invites his readers into the visual pleasures and subtleties of the art while equipping them with fascinating historical, cultural and artistic background. The book’s designers and printers took as their standard, Arts of the Sikh Kingdoms -- and easily matched it.
